About Us
HD Magazine is an online publication dedicated to the culture, art, and history of Uzbekistan and Central Asia. We produce content that offers a fresh perspective on the region - deep, contemporary, and visually engaging. The magazine operates in three languages: Uzbek, Russian, and English. Our goal is to speak to the world in our own voice, on equal terms, without the need to "translate" ourselves for an outside gaze.
We are currently looking for an editor to lead and shape the English-language edition of HD Magazine. This is not a translator position - it is a full editorial role requiring a global perspective, excellent command of English, and the ability to turn ideas into high-quality editorial content.
Who we’re looking for?
An editor with strong English skills (native or near-native level), capable of creating and editing content that resonates with both international and local English-speaking audiences. We need someone who understands both language and concept—who can manage editorial workflows, work with writers, and transform complex topics into accessible and compelling reads.
Responsibilities
Editorial Work:
- Editing content across various genres: interviews, reportage, essays, analysis, longreads, and opinion pieces
- Adapting translated content from Uzbek and Russian—not word-for-word, but in spirit and style appropriate for an English-speaking audience
- Ensuring logical structure, factual accuracy, and editorial coherence
- Maintaining high literary standards and stylistic consistency across publications
Planning & Organization:
- Contributing to editorial planning and content strategy for the English-language segment
- Coordinating with freelance writers, translators, and editors—from brief to final publication
- Collaborating with the broader team: managing editors, SEO specialists, designers, video production
- Overseeing publication schedules and editorial documentation
Content & Strategy:
- Generating and curating topics, voices, and formats of interest to English-speaking audiences
- Participating in the development of new formats and special editorial projects
- Shaping a culturally sensitive editorial agenda—free of exoticization and respectful of the local context
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in editorial, journalism, or writing roles (preferably in international, English-language, or cross-cultural projects)
- Excellent English (native or near-native proficiency)
- Strong writing skills and the ability to structure complex content clearly
- Interest in and understanding of Central Asian culture, society, and history
- Ability to adapt content from other languages and cultural contexts
- Strong collaboration skills with writers, designers, and editorial teams
- Knowledge of Russian and/or Uzbek is a plus
- Experience with CMS platforms (our backend is based on Django) is an advantage
- Ability to work independently, with good organizational skills and attention to detail
What we offer?
- Competitive compensation based on experience and scope of responsibilities
- Flexible working arrangements: remote, in Tashkent, or hybrid
- A passionate and detail-oriented team that values creative ideas
- The opportunity to help shape a new voice in English-language media about Central Asia
- Space for growth, experimentation, and in-depth storytelling
How to Apply?
Please send your resume, writing samples (if available), and a brief cover letter telling us why you want to join our team and what you can contribute to the English edition of HD Magazine.
